Introducing Our New Intern, Shelby Richardson-Lau

Who Are You?

I’m Shelby and I’m from Calvert County, Maryland. Don’t know where that is? That’s okay; most people I tell have no idea either. To put it in perspective, think of Annapolis… then go another 40 minutes south. I graduated from UMUC in December 2015 with a Bachelors in Business. During the time I was going to school, I was also working at the Census Bureau full-time. I was there for 3.5 years. I’m one of four children, and my two sisters and I are all names after cars (Shelby, Lexis, and Dakota). I also have a two year old Chihuahua/Yorkie mix that will likely make an appearance at Betamore from time to time. So be on the lookout!

What Are You Doing Here?

I was at my aunt and uncle’s house early last fall, when my cousin, Sam, came home from his internship at Betamore and was talking about all the stuff he had done that day. The thought of this place immediately intrigued me and we went on talking about it for the next few hours. A few weeks later, I volunteered at BetaCity and that was it. I knew I had to start making moves to get to Baltimore on a more full-time basis. Since then I have been coming in on my days off and helping with events. As of two weeks ago, I made the decision to quit my job at the Census Bureau and work here during the week. My ultimate goals while I’m here are to learn as much as I can, get to know the innovative, bright minds who are involved with this organization, and be able to say that I was a part of Betamore’s efforts to help and grow startup businesses.
