On Tuesday December 3rd, we participated in #GivingTuesday– a national day of giving that intentionally follows Black Friday and Cyber Monday and allows us to take a step back from the holiday shopping season to focus on giving to those in need. To prove that Baltimore can have as much of a charitable impact as larger cities, we partnered up with Give Corps’ Bmore Gives More campaign and set out to help Baltimore become ‘the most generous city in America’.
To kick-off the holiday giving season, we decided to raise money for our friends and neighbors, The Digital Harbor Foundation. Specifically we wanted to help support their youth summer camp called MakerCamp. It’s a tech-focused summer camp for kids which takes place largely in part due to generous donations from supporters and sponsors. Last year, 80% of the youth attending the camp received full or partial scholarships, covering the price of attendance as well as a free breakfast and lunch.
We began our fundraiser one week before Giving Tuesday with what we thought was an aggressive goal of $2,014. Due to an overwhelming amount of support, we surpassed our initial goal in just 24 hours and decided to set a new goal of raising $4,000 by #GivingTuesday. Through the generous donations of our community, we were able to hit our goal and raise a total of $4,096! We’re excited that this will be used to help some of our city’s youth attend next summer’s camp. In addition, the city as a whole raised a remarkable $5.5 million dollars on Tuesday, surpassing Bmore Gives More’s $5 million goal and officially making Baltimore the most generous city in America!
