Betamore Community Spotlight: Michael Tucker

Member: Michael Tucker

Operations Director at Baltimore Angels

The Betamore Community Spotlight is a new blog series that shines a light on our members and their companies. Each week we’ll feature a different member and share a glimpse into what life as a Betamore member is all about.

What’s one thing no one knows about you?

My two dogs have over 3,500 followers on Instagram. That’s more than me and all my family members combined. @lilyandparker hasn’t “sold out” and monetized just yet.

What’s one thing you wish you knew before working for a startup?

I wish that I knew how crazy the Baltimore Tech community was. I wasn’t expecting anything else other than professionalism- and there is nothing wrong with that. But, I like that people in Baltimore have a lot of pride in helping each other and working together, and as a result they all become friends. So when there are parties and people are hanging out, feeling themselves, and having a few drinks, I see people I work with get a little wild and crazy. It’s been a really cool experience to see that people I look up to on a professional level aren’t just straight-faced, suit wearers!

What superpower would you like to have and why?

I’d love to be able to freeze time. With my job, I’m constantly busy doing a multitude of things and there’s a whole host of other passions I have. So, there are never enough hours in a day. Before I know it, I look at the clock and it’s 4 o’clock, then 5 o’clock, then it’s time to go get coffee or drinks with someone, then my day is over, and ready to start back up again. I never have enough hours in the day. So, being able to freeze time would be my ideal superpower.

Best part of the Betamore Community:

I think the people are my favorite part. With my job, I don’t have to work here. I could work from anywhere. But, it makes a lot of sense to try and position myself in the heart of the tech community. So, I like working out of Betamore, where through osmosis and serendipity I feel in the loop with what’s going on in Baltimore when it comes to tech and smart people building really cool things. That is the number one reason why I’m here, the members- the people.

Describe Betamore’s Community in one word.

Flat or seltzer water?

Coffee or espresso?

Stairs or elevator?

Stairs. [Almost] always.

PC or Mac?

What’s your favorite inspirational quote?

I like the quote by Nietzsche: “And those who were dancing were thought to be crazy by those who couldn’t hear the music.”
